LITTLE GREEN THUMBS KIDS GARDEN CONTEST
Since 2019, the Little Green Thumbs program through Sustainable Food Edmonton started hosting a Kids Garden Contest for students to participate in each year. Our goal is to engage students, teachers and parents in a fun contest that allows students to express their creativity and stimulate their imagination around growing food. Below is a snapshot of contributions from students over the years.
2025 Contest - Sunflower Gardens for Pollinators
We have launched our contest and the theme is Sunflower Gardens for Pollinators. We are asking teachers and students to help create more habitat for pollinators with a sunflower patch. Thanks to a generous seed donation from West Coast Seeds, we are sending sunflower seeds to any of our 74 classes that want to participate.
Steps to Create your Sunflower Garden:
Review the Guide for Teachers.
Research, read and learn about sunflowers; where they grow and what they need to thrive. For example, https://www.westcoastseeds.com/blogs/wcs-academy/sunflowers
Take a walk in your schoolyard. What areas would make a good Sunflower Garden? What size will the garden be? Is there enough sun and protection from wind? Would they receive some rain?
Work as a class or in groups to create a plan for your garden. Decide the location and when you will plant your garden, and how you will care for it until summer vacation. We recommend you plant your seeds directly in your chosen spot in mid- to late May.
Decide on the design – will it be a drawing or a 3D illustration?
Submit a photo of your design and any additional planning documents to us by June 1 for a chance to win a prize.
We thank our generous sponsors for the wonderful prizes for this contest:
1 gift certificate (valued at $50), donated by The Outdoor Learning Store
1 Mason Bee Home Kit, donated by Butterfly Wings n' Wishes Ltd
2 Leafcutter Bee Blocks, donated by Butterfly Wings n' Wishes Ltd
